Vijayawada: Stepping Back in Time

Covering an area of 261 square kilometers, Vijayawada is one of the larger commercial cities of Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the most culturally significant places in south India with a soaring population of 1 million. The “Land of Victory” or Vijayawada is famous for its many temples, museums and heritage buildings. It was ruled by different dynasties and kings, among which the great Krishna Deva Raya holds a special place.

Legend has it that it was named as Vijaya Bahuda or “returning after victory” by the rulers of Orissa after conquering it. It is fondly known as Bezawada. Originating on the bank of river Krishna, it holds a special position in Hindu mythology and is a sacred place of worship for many Hindus. The landscape of Vijayawada is dotted with historical temples, artistic caves and museums. It is also home to the best corporate education systems in India.

 Vijayawada is a land of gardens, with fresh greenery and parks found at the corner of every street. It has over 60 parks, among which Rajiv Gandhi Park, KL Rao Park, Dr.B.R.Ambedkar & Raghavaiah Park and the Mahatma Gandhi Park. Many of them have recreational facilities like bungee trampoline, swimming pool, skating rink and beautiful gazebos to have a family picnic.

 The tourist attractions of Vijayawada are mainly temples, museums and historical monuments. Kanaka Durga Temple is one of the oldest places of worship and is skilfully constructed. It lies on the Indrakeeladri hill overlooking River Krishna. Many other temples like Sri Nagarala Sri Maha Lakshmi Ammavaru Temple, Radha Krishna Temple and ISKCON Vijayawada are popular landmarks of the city.  Vijayawada is a religious city not only for Hindus but also for Muslims. Hazarat Bal Mosque is a holy centre for the followers of Prophet Mohammed.

Mogalarajapuram Caves are the finest examples of ancient Indian architecture, probably excavated as early as 5th century AD and the first of their kind in south India. Undavalli Caves, Prakasam Barrage, Gandhi Hill, Gundala Matha Shrine and Victoria Museum are some other popular tourist destinations.  

 The topography of Vijayawada is flat with few ranges of low and medium sized hills. The climate here is just as unvarying with hot summers and moderate winters. The temperature can rise up to 40 degree celsius during April-May. It receives moderate rainfall from June to October, when the city becomes fresh and exotic. November to February is the best time to visit as the weather is pleasant and dry, perfect for sightseeing. Vijayawada flights are plenty in number and find their entrance through the Vijayawada Airport, situated at a distance of 20 kilometers from the city.
