Rudrasagar Lake: Agartala's Best kept Secret

The Rudijala, more commonly known as Rudrasagar Lake, is a fluid monument located in the Somanura subdivision in the West Tripura district. This beautiful water body is located just 55 kms from Agartala and is easily accessible. Located at a convenient distance from the state capital, it is the most prized possession of Tripura. It is recognized as one of the national lakes and covers a water area of 5.3 sq km.

Over 50 years old, the lake is instrumental to the cultural heritage of Agartala and prides itself for its grandeur and scenic beauty. The waters of this lake are constantly refreshed by three perennial streams - Noacherra, Durlavnarayacherra and Kemtalicherra. The lake is also internationally known for its rich bio-diversity including a wide range of fish and several species of wildlife. Continued efforts are being made to develop the lake and conserve its natural habitat.

A description of the Rudrasagar Lake is incomplete without the mention of Neermahal or ‘Water Palace’ - the Royal Palace of Agartala. Constructed by the then king, Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, Neermahal is an architectural trophy that is adorned with magnificent balconies, splendid archways, domes and bridges and intimidating towers. The intricacy and skill of art at the time is evident from this elegant, yet powerful historical structure. The crystal-clear reflection of the palace in the Rudrasagar Lake adds the final touch to complete this stupendous picture.

It is a natural sedimentation reservoir and is identified as a wetland of the Gumti river. Agartala has a moderate weather all through the year. Winters are usually cool, extending from October to February. April to July is the best time for visiting as the weather is perfect for sightseeing. As the intermittent showers drench the lake with serenity and mystic wonder, tourists can engage in the fun and frolic of the annual boat festival held in July-August.

Agartala is well connected to the metropolitan cities of Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai by air. Agartala flights are available from Guwahati, Imphal and Shillong. From Agartala, a road trip is sufficient to reach this exotic destination.
